Hyperwords : Cool Firefox extension

Posted in Firefox, Web 2.0 by Brajesh on January 13th, 2006

Hyperwords

“With Hyperwords, all text on the web is interactive (not just the links): select your text and search, lookup, email, translate and so on.”

I like it already. One of the reason being, it also includes Clusty as one of the search engines along with Google, Yahoo and Alexa(duh). It has the usual Web 2.0 blabby features- tagging, blogging and all that. And it has some ‘more useful’ features as well. It is going to be a truly addictive firefox extension. A ‘thumbs up’ from me.

Just one issue: It doesn’t work with textbox, I would love it to.

It works with text boxes now, with version 1.3, due out as soon as Mozilla approves it. :-)

    updated to v1.3. thanks!
It’s working well so far, except it’s still not detecting textbox text e.g. in this comment box here (prompts to enter a word).
Anyway it’s a great extension, and I use it all the time.

    And after 1.3, - 1.5.1 !

    yes, Hyperwords 1.5 is out.

This is a substantial upgrade, featuring numerous small fixes and additions and a Toolbar.

Now this is very cool: Try Hyperwords with the Toolbar only. Go to Preferences (at the bottom of the menu) and click on the ‘Apperance’ tab. Then choose the ‘Toolbar’ mode.

You can now select text on a page, hit ‘return’ and it will hoist the selected text up to the Toolbar. You may now choose a command with your mouse or use the keyboard shortcuts to rapidly issue commands.

Take a look at the the new User Guide (also at the bottom of the menu) to learn what else is new and a few tips and tricks if you want to.
